46hr Block of Line for Kiwi Rail Bridge

Smith Crane and Construction was at its best the weekend of July 23rd/24th completing a KiwiRail Bridge replacement on the Main South Line in Hinds in 46hours. The project involved replacing two adjacent 9m long single-span steel bridges with a twin precast concrete box culvert during a 46-hour Block of Line. The KiwiRail representative deemed the project to be one of the most challenging block of line projects he had been a part of, however with strategic planning, effective risk management and a determined site team, the project was delivered successfully, safely, and on time.

It requires real grit to deliver these sorts of projects made more challenging by being over the weekend, requiring a 24/7 workforce and delivering in the middle of a wet winter.

We are particularly proud of our site team of Matt Draper, Hugo Karl, Lawrence McBreen-Smith, David McCallum, Dan Gardiner, Alex Waller, Tane Hodges, Taylor Nutsford, Sam Dennis, Mark Scott, Carl Holdem, Nick King Turner, Codey Dickinson, Rodney Williams, Tony Madden, Barry Tipene, Joel Cunningham, Zach Fenwick-Bull, Ricky Hinch, Nigel G, Tim Ridder, Hemi Them. In addition to our support from the Precast Division, Transport Division, Crane Division, Mechanic Crew and key subcontractors Sam Terry, Pete Ellis and Craig Fraser.
