Manawa Bay Project - Auckland Airport

At Smith Crane and Construction, we pride ourselves on providing innovative solutions and problem-solving to get the best results for our clients. We recently had a challenge at the Manawa Bay Project by Savory Construction for Auckland Airport, where we were bound by strict Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand height restrictions.

This project was a highly complex job due to having a 42m height restriction at all times, which meant our team had to think outside of the box to get this job completed. Our National Crane Hire Manager Jason Bourke and Lift Engineer Paul Thornhill soon established that this job would be impossible to undertake with any Mobile Crane that is currently available in New Zealand so our Liebherr LR1280 280T Crawler Crane was the crane for the job!

Our Crane Operator, Kelly Wineera, had to precisely install 3T Air Conditioning units at a 95m radius ensuring the height restriction of 42m was strictly followed at all times. This was done by having to reconfigure the Crane's Boom after every lift to meet the specific dimensions to ensure we could reach the AC unit’s location without going over the strict 42m height restriction.

Well done to our team for getting these lifts completed successfully and working around these restrictions. None of this would’ve been possible without our highly skilled team and precise planning.
