Smith Crane and Constructions New LR1160.1 arrives in Antarctica.

Our Liebherr LR1160.1 has made it to Antarctica for the Ross Island Wind Energy Project!

Smith Crane and Construction recently purchase a brand new LR1160.1 160t crawler crane from Liebherr for this project ensuring it was suitable for the site conditions. The crane was transported by ship on the Ocean Giant Heavy lift Vessel and has been successfully unloaded and and assembled.

The Ross Island Wind Energy Project is a three 1000kW turbine wind farm that will supply renewable energy to power Scott Base and the neighboring American base at McMurdo Station. One of the new turbines generates almost as much energy as the three current Enercon E30 turbines which are being taken down and, combined with battery storage systems (BESS), will provide more than 90% of the new Scott Base electrical demand per annum.

Thanks to our valued client Antarctica New Zealand and well done to our crew lead by Site Manger Rusty Rhodes and Contract Manager Lawrence McBreen Smith.
